Data Empathy-How to Win in Health Care
Kevin Mooney, Senior Director, Enterprise Data Governance, Cleveland Clinic
Josna Koshy, Product Manager Enterprise Data Governance, Cleveland Clinic
While Data Governance has a long-standing body of practice and knowledge in other industries like banking and finance, it is less mature in other sectors, especially in Healthcare.  As a result of this lower maturity, there is a tendency to not know the right strategy to structure and set up a Data Governance program.

At the Cleveland Clinic, historically, our mission is to get the right data to the right people at the right time, while keeping sensitive data safe and secure. There is nothing more sacred in healthcare than Patient Information and its care and governance is mandatory.

This session will educate the audience on how to overcome these challenges by covering the below topics:

  • Importance of Relationships and Partnerships within the Enterprise
  • Structure of our Enterprise Compliance and Operational Interlock
  • Establishing processes for the management of data through Policies and Procedures
  • Communication Framework through Institute Liaison Program and
  • Outline the Technology components that are critical to a successful Data Governance implementation
    • Information Management Program
    • Master Data Management Implementation

In this session, we will also share how having members from diverse career backgrounds on our Data Governance team help complement each other’s skills and lead us to a more successful Data Governance program.. This session will be useful to anyone who is just embarking on setting up an Enterprise Data Governance program within their Organization or is looking to take their implementation to the next level by leveraging industry best practices.

Data Discovery & Intelligence: The Key to Unlocking Synergies in Data Governance, Privacy and Security
Dan Sholler, Senior Director of Product Marketing, BigID

Business understanding of the value of data governance programs is growing. But in practice these programs are often held back because the scale of the effort is unappreciated, and they are riddled with conflicting goals. Data professionals are chartered with unlocking the value of data, and at the same time enforcing rules about its use. While these objectives are seemingly at odds,  it is possible to harness these challenges and enable them to reinforce one another. It turns out that many data governance problems arise because of limitations on what data is governed, and what we know about that data. Learn how to build a foundation of data intelligence, and a data registry complete with the correct contextual information about the data. This in turn can drive simultaneously reinforcing governance, privacy and security management efforts. This presentation will discuss how leading organizations have tackled issues such as data lake governance, CCPA, and document security synergistically:
  • The Data Discovery Platform
  • Governance at Scale
  • Solving the privacy paradox
  • Addressing Data Security

Award Winning Practices in Data Governance from Dun and Bradstreet
Winner of the 2018 Data Governance Best Practice Award
Lisa Baughman, North American Data Governance Leader, Dun and Bradstreet

This presentation will showcase a number of best practices in Data Governance put into practice in the Data Governance program at Dun and Bradstreet (D&B) that won the prestigious DGPO Data Governance Best Practice Award. One such practice is Data Stewardship - the establishment of a network of individuals across the enterprise who champion Data Governance in their area of the business and communicate back to central Data Governance issues that need to be addressed. Closely related to this is the practice of using RACI matrices to distribute Data Governance accountabilities, and this too is explained. Data Classification is another best practice that has been implemented in order to categorize data elements for particular governance needs.  Finally, this presentation will explain the mechanisms to policy compliance.

Attendees will learn:

  • How D&B has implemented best practices in the areas of Data Stewardship, RACI, Data Classification, and Data Policy Compliance
  • How D&B rolled these out to the organization
  • The details of these best practices
  • The challenges and successes of the best practices

Data Intelligence: Empowering the Citizen Analyst to Realize True Business Value
Danny Sandwell, Director, Product Marketing, erwin, Inc.

The intersection of three technological advances  1) exploding data production, 2) scalable big data computation, and 3) the accessibility of advanced analytics, machine learning and artificial intelligence – have established a fertile environment for data innovation. As such, we’ve seen the rise of the “citizen analyst” who brings business acumen and subject-matter expertise closer to discovering strategic and tactical data-driven insights. But the opaqueness, complexity and siloed nature of enterprise data has hindered this role, increasing the risk of failure and swelling the time and effort to realize true business benefits.

As with any complex mission, the key to achieving your objectives is sound, actionable intelligence. In the case of empowering the citizen analyst, shared enterprise data assets must be made available to a broad set of data consumers in a governed way.

This governed data intelligence includes:

  • Organizing available data assets in a consumable and contextual way to raise awareness among different data consumers
  • Improving data literacy among these consumers as to how different data assets can be used while observing data policies and maintain regulatory compliance
  • Simplifying and accelerating data accessibility to support citizen analysts’ needs through automated data management and process optimization

In this session, we’ll look at the key elements for successful and sustainable data intelligence through the lens of traditional intelligence practices.

A Comprehensive Enterprise Data Model is Foundational to Successful Data Governance
Kevin Schofield, President, ADRM Software, Inc

While many focus on processes and roles when planning data governance and stewardship programs, too often not enough attention is paid to the data that is to be governed. This talk will explain why the speaker's experience has lead him to the conclusion that a comprehensive and detailed enterprise data model is foundational for organizations who want to ensure the success of their data governance and stewardship programs.

Defining and establishing data governance processes and roles is important, but without clear and precise communication about the data that is being governed and the scope of responsibility of individual data stewards, there is significant risk that data governance efforts will not achieve the desired benefits.

This talk will highlight some of the ways in which a comprehensive enterprise data model can improve and accelerate data governance initiatives including:

  • improved communication between stakeholders
  • more clarity regarding scope of responsibility of data stewards
  • business quality metadata to populate business glossaries and data catalogs

Toll Gate for Data Governance
Kash Mehdi, Data Governance Domain Expert, Informatica
For organizations looking to embark on a data-driven digital transformation journey, an enterprise data governance program is like a toll gate. To be successful moving data to the cloud or a new system, an enterprise data governance program will enable:
  • Business Meaning – Ensuring that data has proper meaning in terms of its definitions from the business perspective
  • Data Ownership – Warranting that data has ownership defined with clear roles and responsibilities for business and technical stewards
  • Data Lineage – Ensuring that the data is traceable from the source to the target plus transformation along the way
  • Data Quality & Privacy – Ensuring that the data has proper data quality rules and privacy controls defined, and agreed upon by all stakeholders with scorecards and dashboards

All four dimensions above form the toll gate for data governance. Once met, data gets the green light and transformed in its journey to digital transformation.

Case Study:  Distributed Data Stewardship for Contact Records in a CRM System
Mike Ostrander, AVP Data Governance, Vizient Inc
Vizient is the nation's leading health care performance improvement company, and as a member-owned, member-driven healthcare improvement company, it is critical for us to know our members.  Like other B2B companies, our needs went beyond address validation and householding, so we couldn’t solve this with just technology.  As part of a data cleanup project in Vizient's existing enterprise CRM, we successfully implemented a program of Contact Data Governance and Stewardship.

In this case study, we will cover:

  • Strategies and drivers used to get the project launched
  • Critical data elements identified in our CRM, and multi-pronged approach to data cleanup
  • In-house tools and resources that made the project successful
  • Rollout and Training 100’s of Sales & Client Management staff to be Data Stewards
  • What worked, and what didn’t
